Case studies and hoof pics!!!

" Stormy" came to us in January 2006. She is a 22 year old Appaloosa. She had foundered in November 2006 on an entire Apple tree. The owners did not think they could handle the rehabilitation process and felt it was best if she came to live with us. They said if we could help her, we could have her. She is ours now and we love her. Here are some pics of her progress throughout the past six months.

Stormy's story

Stormy foundered on Apples in November 2006. The owners called us in as the last resort. She was not reccumbent but she wasn't moving. She got a nice trim and was promptly pulled off all sweets and grass. She was put in a dry lot with all the hay and water she could stand and fitted with Boa boots.

Four weeks went by and then we saw her for her second trim. She was having a hard time standing and seemed to be a little worse. Hmmmm!

Three weeks after the second trim the owner called us and said that she had put Stormy on antibiotics (for 21 days) because she could not stand up any more. We were confused. Now the horse was down.

When we finally got to the bottom of it all, the owners admitted to giving her sweets because they felt sorry for her and were feeding her the atibiotics in balls of white bread. Aha!

At this point the owners felt it was best for her to come to live with us. We agreed. What's one more horse when you already have seven.  We had four boys and three girls. It only seemed right to even it up.

It was difficult to get good pics at first. She could barely stand. These were the first ones we could get after her first two trims when she arrived here. We had her in  Boa boots and pads for the first two weeks. The ground was muddy during the day and frozen at night. She took breaks out of the boots when the ground was soft.

These are not the best pics, but you can see that she had not grown too much during the winter months.

By April she had some connected growth.

Approximately Six months later Stormy is running around with our herd and keeping up with them. She still has a long way to go, but she is well on her way!!!
